Process Feedback

Free for teachers and students ยท Research-backed ยท Privacy by default Process Feedback turns the edit history of your work in Canvas LMS and Microsoft Word Online into a detailed Writing Process Report. It shows the data you need to explore possible AI use, along with typing time, copy-paste events, revision patterns, and more. It is a free, research-backed tool with rich process insights, privacy-focused sharing, and support for both teachers and students. For students: understand your own writing process and share it to show your learning journey. For teachers: see how students wrote, not just what they submitted. ๐Ÿ“Œ What is the Process Feedback extension? The extension tracks the edit history of your document locally on your device as you write, and turns the full writing journey into an interactive Writing Process Report. It runs only on the supported platforms and collects no data unless you choose to share. โœจ Currently supported platforms โž› Canvas LMS โž› Microsoft Word Online โœจ Key Features โž› Identify possible AI use timing and locations in your document's edit history โž› Copy and paste events, including what was pasted and when โž› Total typing time and typing fluency โž› Revision vs. drafting time โž› Time spent on each paragraph โž› Break frequency and timing โž› Playback of how the document evolved over time โž› Shareable report link โ€” no account required ๐Ÿ‘ค Who is it for? Students use it to reflect on their writing process and to prove their own work when academic integrity is questioned. Teachers use it to understand how students approach writing, identify who needs support before deadlines, and start honest conversations about AI use without relying on unreliable AI detectors. โœจ How is it different? Unlike AI detectors that guess whether text was AI-generated, Process Feedback shows the actual writing history. You can explore possible AI use, review pasted content, and see how the document evolved from the first keystroke to submission. Process Feedback does not give a verdict or a score. It provides transparent evidence so that teachers and students can have informed, fair conversations about how a piece of writing was produced. Built on peer-reviewed research published in Education Sciences (2023). โš™๏ธ How does it work? The extension records edits locally on your device as you write โ€” nothing is sent to a server. When you open the Writing Process Report, everything is processed on your device and an interactive report is generated instantly. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How do I use it? โž› Step 1: Add this extension to your browser โž› Step 2: Open your Canvas LMS assignment or Microsoft Word Online document and start writing โž› Step 3: Click the Process Feedback button to open your Writing Process Report โž› Step 4: If needed, change the settings to show a simpler, less prominent button instead ๐Ÿ”— How do I share the Writing Process Report? โž› Share Link: Save the report online and share the report URL with your teacher or student โž› Only the data needed for that specific report is uploaded, and only when you choose to share โ“ Frequently asked questions โž› Is it really free? Yes. Process Feedback is free for teachers and students. โž› Does it work offline? Yes, tracking and report generation happen locally. An internet connection is only needed to share a report. โž› Does my teacher see my report automatically? No. Nothing is shared unless you generate and send a share link yourself. โž› Can it prove I didn't use AI? It cannot offer absolute proof, but a detailed edit history โ€” showing your typing, revisions, and time on task โ€” is far stronger evidence than any AI detector score. โŒ Having trouble installing? โž› You need to be logged in to your browser to install any extension โž› Reload the Canvas or Word Online page after installing โž› Your institution's IT department may need to approve new extensions โž› Still stuck? Email us at [email protected] โš ๏ธ Limitations โž› This is a beta version, so please expect occasional rough edges and report any issues you encounter. Your feedback will directly shape future updates. โž› Word Online support currently works only for these URLs: https://*-my.sharepoint.com/ and word.cloud.microsoft. If it is not working for your URL, please contact us. โž› The current version does not detect voice typing (dictation) in the document. โž› Tracked edits are stored only in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB), so they can be lost if you clear your browsing data, uninstall the extension, or switch devices. Save or share important reports before clearing browser data. โž› The extension is not yet well-tested with very large documents (25K+ changes or 50K+ characters), and its text styling is still being refined. If you run into any issues, email us at [email protected]. ๐Ÿ”’ Privacy โž› Privacy by default: your data never leaves your device unless you choose to share โž› When you choose to save a report online for sharing, only the author information and edit history needed for that report are collected โ€” and only to enable that sharing โž› For co-edited documents, obtain permission from all co-authors before viewing or sharing process reports โž› Full privacy policy: processfeedback.org/privacy ๐Ÿ“œ Terms and conditions By installing the extension you agree to the terms at processfeedback.org/terms ๐Ÿ“– Research citation Adhikari, Badri.
